FOR EUROPEAN MOVEMENT – NORTH MACEDONIA

Welcome to the website of the European Movement in North Macedonia!

The European Movement in the Republic of North Macedonia (EMMK) is part of the International European Movement (MEI), founded in 1948. MEI unites many national, regional and local organizations regardless of different political ideas. With more than 50 national councils and 34 member organizations, the International European Movement played a key role in the (re)construction and unification of Europe after the Second World War. At the founding council in The Hague, a decision was made to create the Council of Europe, and then in the construction of the European Community.

The European Movement in the Republic of North Macedonia (EMMK), since its founding in 1991 – until today, has been continuously working on the affirmation of the European integration processes in the Republic of North Macedonia and the affirmation of the Macedonian society within the European public space. EMMK was formalized as a civil association in 2002. All activities, starting from 1991 until today, have a mission to affirm European values among Macedonian citizens and, through various civic initiatives, to involve them in the construction of a society based on democratic principles and social justice. In different periods, the focus of interest was adapted to the dynamic transition environment, but always remained within the framework of the basic corpus of values such as democracy, peace, fundamental rights, justice, freedom, and activities for a better understanding of the factors of discrimination and proposals for its overcoming, with a special focus on discrimination based on gender, age and other grounds. In the last five years, activities were aimed at achieving a higher level of involvement of citizens in the European integration processes. This mission, apart from increasing inclusiveness in the EU integration process, contributes to the dynamism of reforms in various sectors (judiciary, implementation of justice, security, environment, social policy and employment, agriculture and rural development).

MAIN PROJECTS

The general goal, which does not depend on political and other conditions, is the creation of a favourable European integration environment in the country achieved by the following projects:

  1. 1. National Convention for the European Union in North Macedonia (NKEU-MK)

NKEU-MK is a civic platform for an inclusive and transparent dialogue for the democratization of the European integration process of the Republic of Macedonia. According to its working methodology, NKEU-MK includes in the dialogue the representatives of relevant institutions (Government, ministries, judicial institutions, state agencies), MPs in the RSM Assembly, representatives of civil associations, enterprises, chambers, trade unions and other professional public). Although the focus is currently given to the chapters contained in cluster 1 – “Basics”, so far approximately 2000 stakeholders have been involved in the activities of 5 working groups:

Chapter 11 – Agriculture and Rural Development (Working Group 1), Chapter 19 – Social Policy and Employment (WG-2), Chapter 23 – Judiciary and Fundamental Rights (WG-3), Chapter 24 – Justice, Freedoms and Security (WG-4), Chapter 27 – Environment (WG-5) and Chapters 5 – Public procurement, 18 – Statistics and 32 – Financial control in one working group, WG-6, Anti-corruption. The visible result is the recommendations (over 600) adopted by the members of the working groups which are distributed to the institutions and other stakeholders

parties, as well as to the general public (More details on the website: nkeu.mk). The influence of NKEU-MK in the democratization of society can be seen through the dialogue itself, which contributed to building models of participation in society, to increase cooperation between institutions and other stakeholders, making the activities of civil associations visible.

2. Educational programs for youth inclusion

Educational activities have a long tradition at EMMK. In continuity (2004-2016) everything implemented a project for the education of high school students entitled: “Knowing about Europe – we know more about us.” Members of EMMK performed lectures (in the form of project activities) in secondary schools, and to motivate young people for more knowledge about European institutions, quiz contests of knowledge were realized, which were often broadcast live on national TV programs.

3. International and regional cooperation

EMMK is an organization with solid international cooperation. As a full member of the International European Movement participates actively in the work of the three committees (political, social and international relations), as well as in other activities affirming the country in the European space. Also, NKEU-MK has fruitful cooperation with associations from the region of the Western Balkans, together with the regional national councils of MEI (Serbia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro). Currently, EMMK shares a partnership in the regional project “Let’s Justice Rule de Region” which establishes close cooperation between the National Conventions in Serbia, Albania and NKEU-MK.

4. Continuous activity to inform the public about important issues related to European integration, as well as the events undertaken by the EU. Also, the main activities of the EU institutions are translated into Macedonian and disseminated through social networks and updated on the WEB site (europeanmovement.org).

5. Europe Day marking activities – a tradition long 32 years. Also, for more than 20 years, it has maintained the tradition of awarding the “European Person of the Year” award to distinguished persons who promote the Republic of Macedonia in the European space. Also, within the framework of the activities to mark May 9 – Europe Day, numerous activities are carried out (oratory competition, youth debate, quiz competition of knowledge about the EU, painting competition) for the affirmation of European values among primary and secondary school students. schools, as well as for students from larger universities in the country.
